Basic Drawing - Part 1: The Head and Face

Writing by admin on Friday, 11 of April , 2008 at 9:06 am

Most anime drawings start with the face. For the beginner, this can be quite difficult, but following some simple rules and a little practice almost anyone can do it.

Every thing starts with a cross, below is the center cross in a face looking in all directions. You could easily add eyes, a nose and a mouth to these and you would already have a basic anime face.

Very few anime images actually look straight forward, but it is good to start that way so we can see how the face/head is constructed.

Here is a step by step guide to get you started.

Step 1:

Start by drawing a circle, then divide this up as shown in the image. They don’t have to be exact as proportions can change depending on the type of face you are drawing.

Step 2:

Next we draw a mark to represent the chin, where you place this has a direct impact on the shape of the face, in my example it is the same distance from the bottom of the circle as the third portion. Once you have drawn this, add two diagonal lines that intersect the edges of your chin mark, they should cross over each other just below this.

Step 3:

Next we add the cheek bones by adding two rounded lines to both sides of the face. Where you place the bend will impact the shape of the face and is a good way to alter the appearance and draw different characters.

Coming up next: In the next tutorial we will start to add facial features, eyes, mouth, nose, etc..
