Basic Drawing - Part 3: Hair Styles

hair_clumps.jpgAnime hair can be fairly complex, I have added a simple, but effective head of hair to the face we have drawn in the previous tutorials. As with really hair, anime hair is also made up of strands but in anime, they often clump together the hair. Using Clumps of hair is the simplest form of Anime Hair, to give the hair more depth often the bottom line on the hair will be more curvy than the top. In some cases this can be very exaggerated, in others you can hardly see it, but it is this method that gives the hair the anime look. By adding the clumps together you can form the whole hair style. Add more clumps and stands for more complex hair styles.

When putting hair on you anime character, it is worth bearing in mind that it doesn’t matter the style you use or how much hair the character has, the hair always grows from the same region. A common mistake people often make is to forget the character is supposed to have a skull underneath the hair and create the hair to small for the head. It is far better to draw the entire head first and then add the hair to make sure it covers the whole scalp and looks as natural and in proportion as it can.

I have added a basic hair style to the head face that we created in the previous tutorials.

You may also notice that in our example I have added some color to the skin and a small amount of shading (there is still a lot to do, but it helps to give an idea of what the final character will look like).

Have a play around with hair styles and check out the gallery for examples.

Coming up next: In the next tutorial we will start to build up the characters body and look at different proportions and shapes.
